Trapped individual ion at absolute zero temperature.
Laser cooling and ion trapping have progressed to such an extent that one can now speak of realizing a confined atom at absolute zero temperature. In this short publication, we analyze an experiment toward such realization using a single Ba(+) ion in a miniature rf trap. The Ba(+) ion is first laser-cooled to the limit where the ion spends most of its time in the zero-point energy state. Then a...
متن کاملProperties of Neutron Stars
I review attempts made to determine the properties of neutron stars. I focus on constraints on the maximum mass that a neutron star can have, and on attempts to measure neutron-star radii. So far, there appears to be only one neutron star for which there is strong evidence that its mass is above the canonical 1.4 M ⊙ , viz., Vela X-1, for which a mass close to 1.9 M ⊙ is found. Prospects for pr...
متن کاملSpin susceptibility of neutron matter at zero temperature
The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the spin susceptibility and the compressibility of neutron matter at zero temperature. Results are given for realistic interactions which include both a two–body potential of the Argonne type and the Urbana IX three–body potential. Simulations have been carried out for about 60 neutrons. We find an overall reduction of the s...

متن کاملTemperature-dependent pulsations of superfluid neutron stars
We examine radial oscillations of superfluid neutron stars at finite internal temperatures. For this purpose, we generalize the description of relativistic superfluid hydrodynamics to the case of superfluid mixtures. We show that in a neutron star, at hydrostatic and beta-equilibrium, the redshifted temperature gradient is smoothed out by neutron superfluidity (but not by proton superfluidity)....
